PADI SEARCH & RECOVERY DIVER
This is a recreational qualification, the course is a great introduction to searching for and recovering things lost in the water by developing the necessary knowledge and skills for safe search and recovery operations.
Required age/certification level
Minimum age: 12 years old and Padi Advanced Open Water Diver, Junior
Advanced Open Water Diver or have a qualifying certification from another training organization.
Be certified as a PADI Open Water Diver, Junior Open Water Diver and PADI Underwater Navigator Specialty Diver or have equivalent qualifying certifications from another training organization.
There are knowledge reviews in the Padi Search & Recovery Diver manual which must be completed and reviewed by the instructor during a classroom session when you will also watch the Padi Search & Recovery video.
There are a total of 4 dives to be taken over a minimum of two days in the Search & Recovery Diver Course
Search and Recovery Dive One
By the end of Search and Recovery Dive One, the you will:
Demonstrate a methodical search of an area approximately 15 metres/50 feet by 15 metres/50 feet or other dimensions for the same area of search to find a small submerged object. Also a methodical search of an area approximately 30 metres/100 feet by 30 metres/100 feet or other dimensions for the same area of search to find a submerged object not more than 10 kilograms/25 pounds negatively buoyant. You must tie the following knots: a bow line, two half hitches and a sheet bend, correctly while underwater wearing gloves and demonstrate how to safely rig and surface an object not more than 25 pounds/11 kilograms negatively buoyant using an appropriate lifting device.
Search and Recovery Dive Two
By the end of Search and Recovery Dive Two,you will:
Demonstrate the expanding square search for a submerged object in an area approximately 18 metres by 18 metres/60 feet by 60 feet or other dimensions for the same area of search. then use an appropriate lifting device to safely rig and bring to the surface an object found using the expanding square search pattern.
Search and Recovery Dive Three
By the end of Search and Recovery Dive Three, you will:
Demonstrate the jack-stay search for a submerged object in an area approximately 60 metres by 60 metres/200 feet by 200 feet, or other
dimensions for the same area of search, then use an appropriate lifting device to safely rig and bring to the surface an object found using the jack-stay search method.
Search and Recovery Dive Four
Student Led Search and Recovery Dive
By the end of Search and Recovery Dive Four, you will:
Organize, plan and conduct a search and recovery dive with a dive buddy.
Choose an appropriate search pattern and lifting method based on facts gathered about the lost object prior to diving.
Each diver must have a snorkel, mask, fins, scuba cylinder, buoyancy
control device with low-pressure inflator, regulator a secondary air source, a submersible pressure gauge, a compass, a dive knife, gloves, a lift bag, rope and an underwater reel.
