PADI NIGHT DIVER

The Night Diver Speciality course provides you with the skills to plan and organize your own night dives and is intended to serve as a safe, supervised introduction to night diving while emphasizing fun and safety.

The focus of the course is to develop your practical knowledge of night diving and enable you to appreciate the equipment and procedure required to dive safely at night.

Required age/certification level

Minimum age:  12 years old and Padi Open Water Diver certification, or have a qualifying certification from another organization.

There are knowledge reviews in the the Padi Night Diver manual which must be completed and reviewed by the instructor during a classroom session when you will also watch the Padi Night Diver video.

There are 3 dives  in the Night Diver Course

Open Water Training Dive One

By the end of this open water training session, you will:

Descend using a line or sloping bottom as a reference. Demonstrate the proper use of a personal equipment at night e.g. dive light, submersible pressure gauge, compass, timing device and depth gauge. Communications with other divers will be with hand signals and dive lights while night diving.  You will navigate to a predetermined location using a compass/natural features and return to within 8 metres/25 feet of the starting point, without surfacing for orientation. Demonstrate proper diving procedures by maintaining buddy contact throughout the night dive and perform an ascent using a line or sloping bottom as a reference.

Open Water Training Dive Two

By the end of this open water training session, you will:

Descend using a line or a sloping bottom as a reference. Demonstrate the proper use of a dive light and personal equipment e.g. submersible pressure gauge, compass, timing device and depth gauge, at night. Communication with other divers will be with hand signals and dive lights while night diving.  Use your compass to return to the shore or boat underwater with at least 35 bar/500 p.s.i. remaining in your scuba tank. During the night dive you will identify some of the nocturnal aquatic life discussed during the academic portion of the course and demonstrate proper diving procedures by maintaining buddy contact throughout the night dive.

Open Water Training Dive Three

By the end of this open water training session, you will:

Execute a “free descent” using the line or sloping bottom as a visual

guide only. Demonstrate the proper use of a personal dive equipment e.g. dive light, submersible pressure gauge, compass, timing device and depth gauge at night. Communication with other divers will be with hand signals and dive lights while night diving.

During the dive you will remain in a stationary position for three minutes, on the bottom, with no dive lights on and demonstrate proper diving procedures by maintaining buddy contact throughout the night dive and perform an ascent using a line or sloping bottom as a reference.
