How long does it take to become a certified diver?

Open water certification requires class work, five confined water classes and four open water classes.
All of this can be completed in three days or over two days if you take the class on line.

HOW DO YOU CHECK THE EQUIPMENT YOU ARE RENTING IS OK TO DIVE WITH?

Assemble the scuba equipment ready to go for a dive.

Fully inflate the Buoyancy Control Device (BCD) until the over inflation valve vents....then you know you cannot burst the BCD.

Now try breathing hard on the second stage and the alternate air source while looking at the reading on the submersible pressure gauge (SPG).... the reading should not fluctuate at all while doing this. If the needle does fluctuate at all do not dive on the equipment as it will fluctuate more at depth and you may not get enough air!

Turn the air supply valve on the tank off.

Now breath on the second stage until you cannot get any more air out while looking at the SPG......and note exactly where zero is......know where zero is on any equipment you dive with.

Now look at the BCD...... is it still fully inflated? If yes the BCD has no leaks, check all dump vales are working and sealing properly.
If no the BCD should be replaced or repaired.

If everything checks out OK enjoy the dive, if not fix the problem before you dive.

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO IF YOU CAN HEAR A BOAT AT THE END OF YOUR DIVE

If you are in open water and can hear the noise of a boat at the end of a dive do not ascend to the surface.
You will not be able to determine where a boat is as sound travels faster underwater, but if you stop and listen carefully you will be able to determine if the sound is getting louder which is a good indicator regards the direction the boat is traveling.
Dive with a signal marker buoy and/or a dive flag and always ascend right below it. (If boat owners see an object on the surface they do not want to hit it as it may damage their boat.)

Plan your dive so you have at least 500 p.s.i. when you are back on your boat/ at shore.
Ensure you are neutrally buoyant at 15 ft for a safety stop, listen for any boat noise, then dump air as you swim to the surface so you are negatively buoyant when you reach the surface, you can then make a rapid descent if necessary.

In most countries there is no requirement for a boat owner to have formal boat handling training, so many boat owners do not know the rules regards staying clear of diver markers.

A diver is very small in the water and boat drivers will not see you so you need to take every defensive precaution available to protect yourself.

No, I have never been attacked attacked by a shark!
Most shark attacks involve surfers or swimmers at the surface due to mistaken identity and involves just a taster bite, (which can be fatal to us,)

If a diver is hunting and killing fish underwater, the fish he kills will send out electrical impulses as it dies. Sharks are scavengers of the sea and have sensitive receptor that detect these impulses and will try to eat that dying fish, he does not differentiate if a diver is holding it or not!

The remedy is simple “ When scuba diving take only pictures and only leave bubbles!”
